Mrs Willis presents her most respectfull complements to the President an Lady and begs there acceptance of four glasses of Virgia honey. She has not a doubt of that article being plenty in the State of New York but perhaps not wrought in the same manner and of course not so pure. She flatters herself if it has no other recommendation than being sent by an acquaintance from a place near that of his Nativity they will be induced to taste it and will be happy to hear of the welfare of the family and that they have made an agreeable breakfast on it.

Nelly shall begin Musick next week - she has made two or three attempts to write you; but has never finished a letter - she is a little wild creature and spends her time at the window looking at carriages &c passing by which is new to her and very common for children to do.

I wish you to take a prayer book yourself and give one to Hariot the other two to be given to Betty & Patty Custis - I am pleased to hear that the domestic concerns goe on well - sickness is to be expected and Chariot will lay herself up for as little as any one will - it was right to give them more thread if I did not put enough in each bundle - I am truly sorry to hear of another death in the family so soon-

I shall think myself much obliged to Mrs Bassett for any particular notice she may take of Patty Dandridge - I have a great regard for her and wish her to do well - When you write to your Brother remember me affectionately to them - I was very sorry that I was obliged to leave home so soon after they came to Mount Vernon -My dear Fanny remember me to all enquiring friends to Mr & Mrs L. Washington - the Major and give sweet little Maria a thousand kisses for me - I often think of the dear little engaging child - and wish her with me to hear her little prattle - we shall get the letters for her before she will want them.

I have the pleasure to tell you, that we had a very agreable journey, - I arrived in philadelphia on fryday after I left you without the least accident to distress us, were met by the President of the state with the city troop of Horse and conducted safe to Grays ferry, where a number of Ladies and Gentlemen came to meet me, - and after a cold colation we proceed to town, - I went to Mr. Morrises - the children was very well and chearfull all the way, Nelly complained a very little of being sick - as soon as I could I sent for the stay maker and gave him your measure and directed him to send the stays to Colo Biddle, when done to be sent to you, - also two pair of shoes of a new fashioned kind those with Low Heels are for you, those with the high heels is for Mrs. Stuart, with a pr apiece for the two dear little girls - all which I hope has come to your hands before this

I set out on Monday with Mrs Morris and her two Daughters and was met on wednesday morning by the President Mr. Morris and Colo H at Elizabethtown point with the fine Barge you have seen so much said of in the papers with the same oars men that carried the P. to New York - dear little Washington seemed to be lost in a mase at the great parade that was made for us all the way we come - The Governor of the state meet me as soon as we landed, and led me up to the House, the paper will tell you how I was complimented on my landing - I thank god the Prdt is very well, and the Gentlemen with him are all very well, - the House he is in is a very good one and is handsomely furnished all new for the General - 1 have been so much engaged since I came hear that I have never opened your Box or directions but shall soon have time as most of the visits are at an end - I have not had one half hour to myself since the day of my arrival, - my first care was to get the children to a good school, which they are boath very much pleased at ... as no other kind of cushing are worne hear but the crape cushing, or the Hair draped like one I did not send one for you - all the genteel people say Crape cushing is not proper to send to you - but I think in the country where you cannot have a hair dresser they will do very well - My Hair is set and dressed every day - and I have put on white muslin Habits for the summer - you would I fear think me a good deal in the fashion if you could but see me - My dear Fanny send me by some safe convance my Black lace apron and handkerchief they are in one of my drawers in the chest of drawers in my chamber and some thread lace or joining nett it is in one of the Baskets on the shelf in my closet they were fine net Handkerchiefs which I intended to make cap boarders off - I think I shewed it to you and told you I intended to make a border of them - if my Black Handkerchief is not in the drawer Charlot knows where it is to be found - I should think that there could not be any impropriety in Hariot’s to see her cousin whenever she desires it - Remember me to all and believe me your most affectionate -

My Dear John                                  Mount Vernon. April the 20th 1789

I am truly sorry to tell that the General is gone to New York, - Mr Charles Thompson came express to him, on the 14th - when, or wheather he will ever come home again god only knows, - I think it was much too late for him to go in to publick life again, but it was not to be avoided, our family will be deranged as I must soon follow him

I am greved at parting, and sorry to part with your sister as well as with the rest of the family, - I expect to set out the middle of may and have it not my power to send Patty home; I shall be very glad to see you hear before I goe and wish you could make it convenient to come up for Patty - as it is out of my power to send her down - the same Horses that carred the General is to return for me to carry me to New York -

Mr Dr Madam Pamocra February 29th 1788

I received your answer to my Letter of the 25th of last month, in due time & safely. I have to thank you for its kind contents in behalf of my Mother & Family - The Genl's Letter inclosing the Bonds I have not delivered to B Bassett yet: He has not been in New Kent since his marriage but is expected now daily -. I suppose the Genl has informed him that when judgment is obtained & an execution levied on the negroes of my Fathers Estate, he or myself may purchase on the Genl's acct -

My grandmother whom I informed you was recovering, has relapsed & is now very ill - My mother is well & just returned from visiting my Sister Claiborn. Who has been almost dead, but has got better - Mr. Claibornes mother died a few days since, after a long illness -

My compliments to the Major & tell him that his Fanny was well two days ago.

If I can spare the time & raise the money, I wish to go to Kentucky in the spring or fall, in which case I shall call to see you, otherwise I do not know when I shall have the satisfaction of paying my duty to you - My whole attention for three years past has been applied to my Father’s affairs & to the care of my Mother & the children: And I must now endeavor to do something for myself; it shall never be in way by which I must remit my care & attention to them -

The bearer hereof is a Mr. Thos. Allison who has brought home a runaway belonging to us, that had rambled as far as your neighborhood. He promises to have this delivered to you immediately. -

You will make my respectful compts to the Genl. - Give my love to Wash & Nelly and believe me your ever dutiful & Affectionate

My Dear Fanny                                 Mount Vernon February 25th 1788

I was very happy to hear by the Major that you arrived at Eltham without accident and that he left you very well with your friends. I hope you have continued to be so since he came away - as you know that Business is the cause of his leving you. I trust that you will endeavor to reconcile your self to his absence, as you are very sencible that if he does not attend to his affairs he will get nothing done & if his people does not make bread how will he be able to pay the taxes if nothing else is wanting he is very well and we all think he is growing fatt - we have not a single article of news but pollitick which I do not conscern myself about - I wish you could see the papers that comes hear every week as you are fond of reading them - I wrote a long letter to you before the arrival of the Major hear - indeed I was sorry to hear by him that it had not come to your hands- as I think I had written it long enough for it to have got to you before he come away -

Mr Porter and Miss Ramsay was marred on shrove tuesday - and Mr Lear says she looked handsomer the next morning than ever he see her Mrs Jenifer wrote to Mr Stuart some days after that she looked charmingly I have not been to see her, or Mrs West yet but intend to goe to see them as soon as I can get out we have had a remarkable cold winter hear - the snow has never been off the ground since you left us - besides the very cool winds has made it very disagreeable to goe out. Doctor crack was hear today I asked him how Mrs West was he said very well - but a little sick at times with a smile Mrs Jenifer has not been to see me since you went away - Major Wagener has been ill which was a means to carry her home from the new marred folks sooner than she intended to leve them -

My Dear little children have all been very well, till today my pritty little Dear Boy complains of a pain in his stomach. I hope it proceeds from cold as he is much better than he was some months agoe and a good nights sleep I trust will carry of his complaints altogether - I cannot say but it makes me miserable if ever he complains let the cause be ever to trifeling - I hope the almighty will spare him to me -

The General did not goe up the river as he intended he got a bad cold and the dismal weather togather prevented - tho he set out satterday with an intention to reach Mr Fairfaxes that night but some disapointment in fixing the day caused him to turn back and the Colo seemed to bear his disapointment with tolearable patience - and often said he thought himself quite as well by the fire side at Mt Vernon as he should be at the Shenandoah.

The General is very well - as to myself I am as usal - neither sick or well - the major talked of leveing this about the tenth of march you have just time enough to consider if you should want any thing that I have I can assure my Dear Fanny that it would give me great pleasure to send her anything that would add to her pleasure or happyness
