Gender in the American Revolution

Along with Linda Kerber's "Women of the Republic," this book is often seen as revolutionizing the study of women in early America. Unlike Kerber's approach through ideology and intellectual history, Norton's analysis focuses on social history. She argues that the traditional portrayal of pre-revolutionary America as a "golden age" for women was inaccurate, and posits instead that the revolution itself brought about significant and lasting change in the lives of women, especially in their private spheres.
