Martha Washington’s will is in the hand of her granddaughter Eleanor Parke Custis Lewis and was signed in September 1800. It was probated in June 1802. The will was signed and dated on 9/22/1800. A codicil was added on 3/4/1802. It was probated on 6/21/1802. During the Civil War, the will was taken from the Fairfax County Courthouse by Brig. Gen. David Thomson, who later gave it to his daughter Mary Thomson. It was then purchased by J. Pierpont Morgan. It was returned to the Fairfax County Circuit Court in 1915.
