Correspondence between Martha and George Washington

Appended to a letter from Lund Washington to George Washington, this brief note is significant primarily because it is one of two surviving communications from Martha to George Washington. After George’s death, Martha destroyed their correspondence; only a handful of letters survived. The note expresses Martha’s pleasure that George had safely arrived in Williamsburg, where he had journeyed to attend a session of the House of Burgesses (image courtesy of Mount Vernon Ladies' Association).

My Dearest

It was with very great pleasure I see in your letter that you got safely down. We are all very well at this time but it still is rainney and wett. I am sorry you will not be at home soon as I expected you. I had reather my sister woud not come up so soon as May woud be much plasenter time than April. We wrote you last post as I have nothing new to tell you I must conclude myself
