Description

George Washington was an avid theatergoer, and in 1789 bought eleven tickets to a production of The School for Scandal at Philadelphia’s South Street Theatre. George and Martha sat in a private Presidential box for the occasion. They attended the theatre often during the Presidential years, often with family members, which occasionally included household slaves such as Ona Judge.
