Description

This shoe buckle was found during archeological excavations of the “House for Families,” which was the main dwelling for household slaves at Mount Vernon until it was torn down in 1793.  The buckle was likely passed down from a member of the household to a slave (image courtesy of Mount Vernon Ladies' Association).
