Title

Pastel Drawing, Martha Washington, c. 1796

Description

Most of the portraits that survive of Martha Washington portray her as an elderly woman, either during George Washington’s presidency or after the Washingtons’ retirement to Mount Vernon. This image, executed by James Sharples in 1796, belongs in that group. But as a pastel drawing, it is in an unusual medium. It is also significant for its unusual profile view of the first First Lady.
